Tasks
Objective of Job: Development of the battery pack mechanical system and/or components for Mercedes-Benz in-house or “buy battery” projects, from the conceptual phase through serial production.
- Ensure battery mechanical KPI fulfillment, project milestones, product robustness and cost through digital development, hardware validation and optimization loops.
- Conduct failure analysis and risk assessment to support plant topics and field issue resolution.
- Manage change, documentation for R&D release, lessons learned and knowledge sharing.
- Report and align cross-functionally with stakeholders.
Battery mechanical system and component development
- Derive and manage requirements from the vehicle and e-drive to the battery mechanical system and components, defining design targets and interfaces.
- Evaluate pack and key component designs with suppliers and finalize technical concepts, considering mounting, vehicle crash, bottom damage, structural durability, corrosion and assembly.
- Drive design maturity through digital development, including DMU and simulation/CAE.
- Plan and coordinate mechanical system validation through DVP&R.
- Ensure correlation between simulation and physical test results.
- Develop design improvements based on validation results.
- Track supplier technical documents, drawings, BOMs, FMEA, GD&T and release documentation.
- Support plant try-out, assembly and relevant R&D topics during production ramp-up.
- Analyze and resolve field issues.
Cross-functional coordination
- Align with the R&D battery project manager, e-drive system and vehicle departments on milestones, interfaces and technical topics.
- Prepare technical content for design reviews, risk assessments and releases, including deviation and waiver proposals when needed.
- Document optimization, evidence and lessons learned for future projects.
Other tasks
- Optimize and standardize existing processes and implement new processes to improve efficiency and development speed.
- Act as the technical R&D contact for Mercedes-Benz internal interfaces and the BBAC plant cooperation partner.
- Collect Chinese market information on market requirements and advanced technology and communicate it to teams and Mercedes-Benz R&D in China and Germany.
Qualifications
- University degree in Mechanical Engineering, Automotive Engineering or a related field.
- 5+ years of OEM or supplier experience in automotive or high-voltage battery mechanical development.
- Profound knowledge of battery pack mechanical system and/or component development.
- Experience with automotive standards and development processes from specification creation through R&D release.
- CTP/CTC battery development and vehicle integration experience preferred.
- Knowledge of CTP/CTC production processes, key mechanical component design and validation, and production processes.
- Strong CAD software skills, such as Siemens NX, and MS Office skills.
- Structured problem-solving skills, including 8D, Ishikawa, risk assessment and corrective-action tracking.
- Project management skills are beneficial.
- Team-player attitude, knowledge-sharing and continuous-improvement mindset.
- Cross-functional communication skills in intercultural teams.
- Fluent written and spoken English; German is beneficial.
