How you’ll play your part
In this role, you will independently review retail credit underwriting decisions to ensure that they are made in line with internal credit procedures, delegated authority frameworks and applicable regulatory requirements, including FCA CONC obligations. You will support the delivery of consistent, fair and compliant customer outcomes.
Main accountabilities
- Conduct daily, timely and structured reviews of retail credit underwriting decisions using a defined Quality Assurance framework and methodology.
- Assess decisions against internal credit policies, delegated authority limits, approval frameworks and FCA CONC requirements relating to creditworthiness, affordability and responsible lending.
- Ensure evidence supporting decisions is appropriate, complete and clearly documented.
- Use a risk-based sampling approach to select cases across underwriter mandates, decision types and risk segments.
- Document QA outcomes, scoring, rationale and findings in accordance with governance requirements.
- Identify trends, control weaknesses and recurring issues, and conduct root cause analysis of procedural breaches, inconsistent decision-making and control failures.
- Provide clear, constructive and evidence-based feedback to underwriting management, with recommendations to improve quality, consistency and compliance.
- Contribute to training programmes, process improvements, procedure refinement and calibration sessions.
- Produce regular QA reporting covering quality scores, key metrics, emerging risks, root-cause insights and recommendations.
- Escalate material issues, breaches and systemic risks through appropriate governance channels.
- Complete competency assessments and maintain the required accreditation before conducting live reviews.
- Implement informal complaint reviews relating to underwriting decisions.
- Create and periodically review the QA framework and QA scorecard in alignment with business and Compliance requirements.
- Maintain knowledge of FCA Consumer Credit Sourcebook (CONC), internal directives, procedures and process changes.
- Support internal audit, compliance monitoring and regulatory reviews.
- Engage with Underwriting, Credit Risk, Compliance and Risk teams while maintaining independence and promoting continuous improvement.
About you
- At least 3 years of experience in a Quality Assurance role, preferably in a credit underwriting environment within the auto finance sector.
- Strong understanding of FCA regulations, including Consumer Duty, Vulnerable Customers and CONC.
- Excellent analytical skills, attention to detail and critical-thinking ability.
- Effective written, verbal, listening, coaching, reasoning and influencing skills.
- Ability to conduct reviews fairly, consistently, objectively and compliantly.
- Strong organisational and time-management skills.
- Ability to interpret data and provide insight.
