Job Overview

This position is responsible for supporting the legal needs of Mercedes-Benz with a focus on class action and consumer litigation as well as advertising and marketing law, and cross-functional business counseling. This role provides practical, business-oriented guidance and helps ensure compliant, customer-focused practices across the organization. This position may also be responsible for other legal topics which impact Mercedes-Benz.

Responsibilities

  • Manage a team of internal and external stakeholders to address a wide variety of class action litigation, including matters related to Magnuson-Moss, breach of warranty, product liability, and other claims.
  • Provide guidance to MBUSA's internal business units to effectively resolve customer claims and ensure they are properly informed of legal issues relating to their activities.
  • Review marketing and advertising materials, including digital, print, social, email, and broadcast materials, for legal compliance and accuracy.
  • Support compliance of website content, online and digital tools, and customer-journey communications.
  • Develop proactive strategies to evaluate legal claims and create processes for the cost-effective and strategic resolution of litigation and pre-litigation claims.
  • Create measures to control costs, comply with operating budgets, and review and approve outside counsel costs.
  • Coordinate discovery responses, prepare and identify appropriate witnesses, appear on behalf of the company in legal matters, effectuate strategy, control outside counsel expenses, and coordinate litigation strategy with colleagues across the business.
  • Guide and lead interdisciplinary and international working groups and teams.
  • Collaborate with corporate communications on press releases and social media content.
  • Keep legal management and business teams apprised of significant lawsuits and legal issues, and work with business teams on root cause analysis.
  • Supervise paralegals who support litigation-related work.
  • Work with legal and business teams on risk reduction.
  • Perform legal research and document findings through formal memoranda.
  • Use artificial intelligence and other tools to efficiently manage legal topics.
  • Provide general legal support on ad hoc legal, compliance, and risk mitigation questions.

Qualifications

  • Licensed as an attorney to practice law, with a minimum of 5 years as a practicing lawyer with law firm or in-house litigation experience.
  • Significant experience litigating class action, consumer protection, and/or product liability claims, preferably in the automotive sector.
  • Experience counseling on advertising and marketing compliance, such as FTC compliance and state consumer protection or UDAP statutes, is strongly preferred.
  • Strong writing, communication, and issue-spotting skills.
  • Ability to manage multiple priorities and work independently in a fast-paced environment.
  • Excellent professional and academic credentials.
  • Excellent legal research and writing skills.
  • Willingness to learn about company products, activities, structure, and third-party business relationships.
  • Strong attention to detail, above-average multitasking skills, and the ability to adapt quickly to changing situations.
  • Ability to leverage AI, technology, software, and databases to manage workflow efficiently and collaborate with stakeholders.
  • Willingness to travel to represent the company’s interests and support other business activities.
  • Ability to work in person on a hybrid or other schedule as determined by corporate policy or business needs at Mercedes-Benz USA’s Sandy Springs, Georgia office.
