Senior Data Engineer

Primark is seeking a Senior Data Engineer to join its Data Platform & Engineering team in Reading. You will lead the design and delivery of scalable data solutions on Primark’s Databricks-based enterprise platform, building trusted data products that power reporting, analytics, AI and data science.

What you'll do

• Design, build and optimise scalable data pipelines, ETL/ELT workflows and data transformation solutions using Databricks, PySpark, SQL and dbt Cloud.
• Develop and maintain robust lakehouse architectures and reusable data models aligned with enterprise data standards.
• Lead engineering initiatives, establish best practices and drive high standards across development, testing, deployment, documentation and monitoring.
• Provide technical guidance, conduct code reviews and mentor Data Engineers.
• Support Primark’s migration from Teradata to Databricks, including data remodelling, pipeline migration and performance optimisation.
• Partner with Analytics, Data Science, Governance and business stakeholders to deliver scalable technical solutions and reusable datasets.
• Improve platform performance, scalability and cost efficiency while contributing to engineering standards and roadmap initiatives.

What you'll bring

• 5–8 years of hands-on experience designing, building and optimising enterprise-scale data pipelines and platforms using Databricks, PySpark and advanced SQL.
• Experience with Azure-based data technologies, scalable lakehouse architectures, data models and modern cloud data solutions.
• Experience with dbt Cloud or dbt Core, including model development, testing, documentation, lineage, deployment workflows, CI/CD and version control.
• Strong understanding of data quality, observability, operational monitoring and performance tuning.
• Experience delivering data products for analytics, reporting, AI and data science use cases.
• Ability to provide technical leadership, translate business requirements into scalable solutions and collaborate across technical and business teams.
• Experience coaching engineers, sharing best practices and driving continuous improvement.
